The Padres CEO is going to be on the show tonight and tomorrow night talking about...among other things...Jake Peavy, Trevor Hoffman and the direction of the Padres. We taped the interview this afternoon (originally scheduled to run 4 min. but there was so much to talk about we went 7 and a half) and decided to cut it up into two parts. For the record we are going to do this every week on Postgame on Tuesday's. The reason I'm blogging about it is to tell you what you're not going to hear in the interview.
First, the payroll. It's going to be down from $72-$73 million to around $40 million next year. Like it or not the Padres and their ownership are subject to the same market forces that you and I are, and that's where they say the payroll will be for 2009.
Second, alot has been made about the Padres not granting Trevor Hoffman an audience with John Moores. I get the feeling that has everything to do with Trevor's agent (who I have never met or spoken to) and the acrimony that has lingered since the last time these two parties negotiated. Obviously I have only heard one side of the story but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that Trevor's agent and the Padres brass do not like eachother...at all. Why Trevor never responded or countered the Padres $4 million offer I do not know, but the reason he never got to talk to John Moores was because the Padres were unwilling to set that meeting if Trevor's agent wanted to attend. Agents are an easy target, but in this case I don't think Trevor's representation did him any favors. Just my opinion.

John,
I understand you are a Padres employee and could never go against what the team tells you to say so I will cut you some slack.
Just one small detail in fact.
Hoffman DID respond through his agent to the Padres offer.
He asked for a meeting with the front office and the owner.
That is certainly a response.
The owner and his employees chose not to respond to Hoffman's agents request for a meeting and instead pulled their offer. That is their choice.
But please do not try to spin it, because what you said is just not true.
